The wine is dark and rich and is not for the faint of heart, if you are looking for a light table wine, go away, quickly… This is wine for drinking, eating and making love. May induce amorous feelings towards others, so only enjoy with very close friends.

Vintage Notes

The 2022 growing season was truly special, with plenty of winter rain to fill our reservoirs, and abundant sunshine and heat through the summer months. An unusual late season rain washed the dust off the berries, starting a gentle cooling trend that set us up perfectly for the final ripening push in the Fall. We hang fruit on the vine longer than most, and the weather conditions in 2022 allowed us time to push that envelope to the limit, resulting in wines with an intense fruit expression, and a full-bodied core.

Vineyard Notes

Sourced from small, family vineyards, (in some cases for 3-4 generations) that are farmed with great care and attention. These vineyards (some are 80+ years old) have been brought together, actually woven together, so the magical fruit could at last become Fortunate Son.

63% Cabernet Sauvignon; 33% Merlot; 4% Petite Sirah

Cooperage

Aged for 35 months in 100% new French oak. We only use the finest French oak barrique with stave wood that is hand-selected for ultra-tight grain, then air dried for three years before being made into barrels.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Diplomat greets the senses with a captivating suite of aromas, including dark cocoa, fresh cut strawberry and vanilla bean. A profound mineral layer, like an outcropping of stone, are wedged alongside sweet notes of candied almond slivers and flaky pie crust. A flourish of rose petals adds perfume, while fresh-cut cedar and a cooling thread of peppermint provide lift and freshness. On the palate, soft and supple tannins glide effortlessly, carrying a tapestry of red fruit and sweet-spice nuance across the tongue. The texture is both silken and inviting, leaving a lingering impression of elegance, balance, and quiet power.

The Diplomat is what the government calls a “Red Wine” as it is a combination of varietals and what I refer to as a 21st Century Claret, which apparently you cannot call it due to some EU bullshit that Washington idiots agreed to with the French bureaucratic heathen. Never-the-Less the wine is power, intricacy and elegance combined.
