Voyager

From the stars we came and to the stars we will return…

Four wines make up the Voyager series

Extremely limited in quantity, each Voyager wine is based upon the Voyager travels and endured an extended aging program called “DEEP SPACE”. The higher the prime number, the darker, the more exotic, distant, and haunting the wine is. The lower the number...the more elegant.

Winemaker Notes

In 1976 I watched, fascinated, as NASA launched the first Mars probe (on the 200th anniversary of U.S. Confederation). The very next year, amongst the jarring clang and thump of disco music permeating the land, I watched the launching of two more ‘DEEP SPACE’ vessels. Those vessels, VOYAGER I and VOYAGER II, were launched in the summer of 1977 to gather vast amounts of data and images of neighboring planets…with hopes they might be able to continue traveling beyond our solar system.

These wines, named Voyager II, III, V and VII, are based upon those Voyager travels. The higher the prime number, the darker, the more exotic, distant, and haunting the wine is. The lower the number...the more elegant.

Wine Notes

This wine comes from the now legendary 2018 vintage and was made of a very small and ultra-specialselection of Fortunate Son barrels. These few, specific barrels were designated for an extended aging program called “DEEP SPACE” that entails 48-months of barrel ageing. The barrels rest untouched, far back in the Hundred Acre – RING Winery, buried 385 feet deep inside Glass Mountain.

Time stops there...The wine is so balanced, time itself polishes the massive structure into something rare, complex, with layered power, a purity of elegance...but only if the wine is the exact, particular one – it must have the potential to withstand and benefit from the very long time 4 years in darkness.

Jayson's Comments

"A Master Warrior a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Impeccable power and elegance yet so exciting and after so many years in the barrels is super expressive, ultra-complex."

“The 2018 Voyager II comes from a single vineyard, The Warrior. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes at you like a wave of blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, cinnamon stick, and rose oil leading to hints of Chinese five spice, red soil, and cumin seed. The full-bodied palate is super-concentrated, with firm, ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and so much perfume. "The heliosphere is the area outside the sun's influence," says owner Jayson Woodbridge. "It represents a kind of a party in a way, a joy. So this is the most expressive wine. This was the darkest deep probe wine. This wine probably won't happen again - this Voyager is a one off."

“Where the probes encountered the jovial-Jovians, the giant planets. The wine is lush, rich, decadent and a very sexy display of intricate power and RICH, RICH, very seductive."

“The 2018 Voyager III is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of creme de cassis, licorice, incense, and cast-iron pan erupt from the glass, giving way to nuances of mint tea, crushed rocks, and damp soil. The full-bodied palate is sparked with earth and mineral hints lifting the dense black fruits within a firm backbone of plush tannins, finishing long and earthy. Beautiful!"

“Largely Cabernet Sauvignon power and darkness, some of the vines were 80 years old, yet swirling with black fruit energy."

“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Voyager V gallops out with energized notes of black and red cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, and kirsch followed by hints of rose oil, Ceylon tea, graphite, and cinnamon toast. The full-bodied palate is intense and impactful, with lively mineral and red berry sparks around the dark, rich fruit, finishing long and savory."

“The darkest and densest of the wines, the probes move past the freezing worlds, and it is pure darkness, structure and smoking righteous layers of dark minerals, plums cherries and saddle leather mixed with some lust for James Bond-like death and destruction of evil forces."

“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Voyager VII delivers evocative notes of Chinese five spice, dusty soil, and incense over a profound core of blackcurrant jelly, black cherry compote, and blueberry pie with hints of eucalyptus and iron ore. The full-bodied palate shimmers in the mouth with a lively line of freshness and firm, very plush tannins supporting the concentrated black and blue fruit layers, finishing very long and minerally. This is incredible."
