Lost Souls

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.

Three wines make up the Lost Souls series

A super-micro production of only a few hundred cases, never offered before, these are massive, ultra-rich and complex wines. They are not for the faint of heart. The vines that go into these wines were 57 years old, some of them 80 years old, with all the unique character that older vines deliver. These old vines are now gone. This series of wines are truly and incredibly rare. They will never be made again.

Vintage Notes

These wines are from the 2020 vintage where disaster predicted nothing would emerge. Picked on Halloween day 2020, the fruit seemed hidden and protected from smoke with sheer determination to survive and once we tasted it, we couldn’t believe how glorious old vine fruit was. I am not going to reveal what varietals comprise the Lost Souls, I don’t want to as these wines can never be repeated. I will tell you they all herald “pure old vine” and they all have Cabernet Sauvignon…and others. That is, it. They are Fortunate Son all the way. Taken together they provided a visceral sense of history.

Wineyard Notes

The vineyards at the David Fulton Winery were replanted in 1963, and this is the story of the last wine made from these “ghost vines,” as they are all now gone. In 2020, several Fortunate Son vineyards were partially picked before the Glass fire. Meanwhile, the 1963 vines just sat there, old, gnarled, low, and hugging the ground like dense bushes or tents covering their clusters. The vineyard was replanted in 2021, with cuttings and clones from all three Hundred Acre vineyards. These wines cannot ever be made again with those gnarled, 57-year-old vines from 1963.

Jayson's Comments

"It was like a miracle for me, I still can’t believe it, the old 1963 vines were absolutely astounding, it was as if they knew this was their last hurrah."

Richness, chocolate, black fruit in layer after layer. Following with a hint of Cuban tobacco and saddle leather, minerals and flowers that will make you want to quit work early, say fuck it and just get some steaks and go home and call your Dad over for dinner.

The Review

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Ghost Vines of 1963 rolls out of the glass with compelling notes of creme de cassis, fragrant soil, and fallen leaves leading to a core of blackcurrant jelly, fruitcake, and crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate is concentrated, with firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a charry reminder. This will be released in April 2024 as part of a trio of one-offs that evoke the story of the 2020 vintage."

"When you taste these monoliths of power and complexity you will wish you had 24 of each of them. Sorry not happening."

Meant for steaks, prime rib, lobster, pork chops, lamb chops, Wagyu beef cooked over fire.

"The 2020 Power and Darkness is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of blackberry compote, stewed black plums, and boysenberry preserves jump from the glass with hints of tar, underbrush, and damp soil. The full-bodied palate has compelling energy and a firm, grainy backbone, finishing long and earthy. This will be released in April 2024 as part of a trio of one-offs that evoke the story of the 2020 vintage." Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent, 11/30/23

"The 1963 vines shone in their final hour, and combined with the other vineyards, a light was born from total darkness."

Black cherry, plum, baked chocolate souffle, violets and blackberry pies made by your beloved Grandmother engulf you in fleeting and folding layer after layers of mythical richness.

"The 2020 Pleasure and Light is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of raspberry coulis, Morello cherries, and warm cassis are followed by hints of candied violets, dried lavender, clove oil, and menthol. The full-bodied palate is plush and lively, jam packed with black fruit and exotic spice flavors, finishing long and opulent. This will be released in April 2024 as part of a trio of one-offs that evoke the story of the 2020 vintage."

A word from Jayson about Lost Souls

Even after testing the wine at the lab, no damage was found, no smoke taint at all. After passing very stringent protocols, we took a leap of faith and, using the most expensive barrels, placed the wine in the underground cellar…untouched, sitting silent. After three years, I had almost forgotten the barrels and I still expected nothing, but upon tasting those barrels I was stunned. I quickly invited others (which I normally never do) and everyone in the room was amazed, nobody could believe it, the wines were staggering. I immediately named these barrels and wines the Lost Souls…which is displayed only on the case, when they are all together…
