Normally winemakers shy away from showcasing lesser expensive wines with their top productions as they worry that the shine of their top cuvees will hurt the impression of the lesser priced offerings.
In true Jayson Woodbridge style, he not only didn’t shy away from the opportunity but ran towards it with vigor and enthusiasm as his confidence in the quality of the Fortunate Son 2019’s was unshakeable.
As Jeb started nosing each wine Jayson talked to him about the 10 years process required to start the Fortunate Son Winery.
He talked about the history of our estate property (Formerly the David Fulton Winery) that dated back to the early 1860’s and his desire to showcase the quality of the vineyards that are the bedrock of the early history of the valley.
Jayson talked about his winemaking philosophy and his approach to farming. Most would expect a scientific diatribe about fermentation and barrels, but Jayson doesn’t talk about his wines this way. He talks about them from an emotional place, how he felt during the spring budbreak, the energy of vineyards in the summer, the pure expression of the flavor of fruit at harvest and the intensity of the aromas as the wine entered their early fermentations.
Jayson doesn’t talk about wine like an engineer talks about a machine….. he talks about them like a painter splattering their soul onto the canvas.

As Jeb tried the wines, he was as coy as he always is. Keeping his cards close to his vest, but it was clear that he felt connected to the wines. When we received the scores my thoughts about that connectivity were validated.
He gave the Diplomat our Cabernet/Merlot Blend a 94-point score and said, “ it would give a great Pomerol a run for its money with its darker red and black fruits, smoky herbs, and earthy goodness on the nose”. The Dreamer our 100% Cabernet followed next receiving a 96-point score saying “I love its balance, it’s medium to full-bodied, has gorgeous tannins, and a great finish.
Lastly and certainly not least came the Warrior our single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The second you nose this wine you know undoubtably that you are entering a different dimension. Dunnuck called it “riveting stuff” also calling it “big and rich but not over the top”.
The 98 score the Warrior received was something special. For a wine in only its second vintage to receives scores that ranked it amongst the very top wines in Napa Valley was something that only an artist and craftsman like Jayson Woodbridge could pull off.

To explain further, I needed to make these wines, I needed to express myself in a new and different way, I wanted to create something completely amazing and new that could be presented to you, a wine you would fall in love with and at a price point which would allow it to be enjoyed at more regular intervals…such as morning, noon and night on any day ending in a Y.
